Semarang (2/02) – Department of Environmental Engineering Diponegoro University
Diponegoro University Environmental Engineering Department sends a student delegation to Japan through Sakura Science Exchange Program 2024 at Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT). The program was followed by a number of selected students: 6 Bachelor students (Rycho Narendra Gavananda, Afiq Fahmi Hasan, Sabriansah Arya Pramuditia, Rayhandi Raditya, Hilya Hafiyya, Naila Aulia Arifahbillah) and 3 Master program students (Amalia Novita Nur Islami, Muhammad Thariq Sani, Yesia Rani San Grace Purba) for 1 week with the main purpose of deepening knowledge and practical experience about the waste management system in Japan.
During the course, students have the opportunity to learn about “Treatment and disposal methods for household waste in Japan” by Prof. Takanobu Inoue of TUT. This activity provides new insights and improves understanding of techniques and methods used in waste management in Japan, which can be adapted and applied in the context of environmental problems in Indonesia. Besides, students also have an opportunity to exchange views and intensive discussions on the various environmental issues facing both Japan and Indonesia. This discussion focuses on the “Treatment system for general waste”, so it can compare and evaluate different approaches in waste management.
Field visits are also important aspects of the program, students visit Toyohashi City plastic recycling center and landfill, as well as Kinuura Port No. 3 waste final disposal site managed by ASEC (Aichi Seaside Environmental Center). The visit provides a real experience of how Japan manages and recycles waste, as well as introducing to the latest innovations in waste treatment, also landfill techniques that are in the ocean. Finally, the students also learned about “Treatment for plastic analysis and analysis using electron microscopy and FTIR” which provides in-depth knowledge of laboratory analysis in plastic waste research.
The Sakura Science Exchange Program is expected to provide inspiration and motivation for students to contribute to the management of environmental issues in Indonesia, by applying the knowledge and experience acquired during their stay in Japan.
